Social Studies Standards Approved Spring 2006

Beginning in June, 2005, a standards committee was charged by the South Dakota Board of Education with revision of the current South Dakota Content Standards and Performance Descriptors, with input from students, parents, teachers, and communities of South Dakota. The final document evolved from recent research in best practices in teaching, the No Child Left Behind legislation, experience in classrooms with the existing South Dakota social studies content standards, the evolution of published standards from other states, the Social Studies Framework for the 2000 National Assessment of Educational Progress, numerous professional publications, and lengthy discussions by experienced kindergarten through grade sixteen South Dakota educators. This revised document was approved by the South Dakota Board of Education on May 15, 2006.
