Report covers nine key issues
Nov. 15 marked the final meeting of the State Aid Study Task Force. The culmination of the group’s work is a report addressing nine key issues related to the current funding formula. A group of legislators who served on the task force are developing legislation that should launch a discussion of education funding during the 2007 session.

Department to standardize certain rates
The Department of Education will standardize certain rates for stipends paid to teachers participating in state-level work groups and substitute pay.

Governor proposes teacher salary enhancement program
Gov. Mike Rounds plans to address teacher salaries during the 2007 legislative session. The Teacher Compensation Assistance Program would provide school districts with an incentive to increase salary policy.

Blue Ribbon Schools recognized
An official from the U.S. Department of Education recently visited the Ethan and White Lake school districts to help them celebrate their “Blue Ribbon” status under No Child Left Behind.

Wanted: Comments on reading/language arts standards
A committee of approximately 80 practitioners has developed revised content standards for reading and language arts. The proposed revised standards are online and open for public comment until Jan. 20, 2007.

Regents diploma offered in 2006-07
Regents Scholar Diplomas will be offered again in 2006-07. The program recognizes graduating high school seniors who have demonstrated academic excellence.  

Grant to promote rigorous, relevant curriculum
South Dakota has been awarded a $300,000 grant to implement a State Scholars Initiative, a national business-education partnership. Four school districts – Sisseton, Sturgis, Vermillion and Wagner – will pilot the program.

 



Birth to 3 Connections provides early intervention for later success. Youngsters receive free services to help them acquire the skills they need prior to entering a school setting.
