Student Rights & Responsibilities
Flag Salute & Pledge of
Allegiance
The school board may legally provide for a flag salute and pledge of
allegiance as a regular school exercise. Students cannot, however, be
required to take part in these or other patriotic activities. A dissenting
student should have a valid reason (such as religious preference or a claim
of a First Amendment privilege) for not participating and should respect
those who do participate by remaining silent or by requesting permission to
leave the area.
While students do not have to
salute the flag, they may not, under state law, willfully and maliciously
abuse or show contempt for the flags of the United States of America or South
Dakota. SDCL
