South Dakota Benchmark Assessment

The Benchmark Assessment is for grades 3-8 and 11 in reading and mathematics. The tests are aligned to the Common Core standards. For the 2014-15 school year, the Benchmark Assessment will be optional to all South Dakota districts and teachers.

The purpose of this assessment is to gain practical experience, at the school, district, and state levels, related to three critical areas:
1) Delivering benchmark assessments
2) Delivering assessments online
3) Assessing mastery of the Common Core standards

Math and ELA teachers can use the Benchmark Assessment for Student Learning Objectives (SLO).

There will be four different testing windows throughout the school year.
• Pre-test: September 2-26
• Interim 1: November 24- December 19
• Interim 2: February 2-27
• Post-test: April 20 - May 15

We believe that each test (reading and math) should take students about 1-1.5 hours to complete. There will be 32 reading items and 40 math items for each grade. The portal for this Benchmark Assessment will be housed in the South Dakota Assessment Portal (SDAP). At the end of the each test, your staff will be able to view their student’s results in SDAP (Data Interaction).
