Nontraditional/Equity

The Nontraditional Program provides resources and training for educators, parents, students and other interested persons on the benefits of preparing for nontraditional careers. Nontraditional careers are defined as "occupations or fields of work, including careers in computer science, technology and other emerging high skill occupations, for which individuals from one gender comprise less than 25 percent of the individuals employed in each such occupation or field of work " (Carl D. Perkins Vocational and Technical Education Act of 1998).

Nontraditional Program Coordinators are located at the four postsecondary technical institutes: Lake Area Technical Institute, Watertown; Mitchell Technical Institute, Mitchell; Southeast Technical Institute, Sioux Falls; and Western Dakota Technical Institute, Rapid City.

The Nontraditional Program Coordinators, Tech Prep Coordinators, state Tech Prep Liaison and state Nontraditional Liaison work together to develop and provide training for teachers, counselors, students and others on practical approaches to recruiting and retaining students to programs that prepare for nontraditional careers.
