Student Health and Academic Achievement Web Page |
|
|
The
CDC's Division of Adolescent and School Health
(DASH) are pleased to announce the release of
the Student Health and Academic Achievement web
page. You can access the site at
http://www.cdc.gov/healthyyouth/health_and_academics/index.htm

academic success among students.
The
Student Health and Academic Achievement web page
will be expanded to include:
-
One-page fact sheets highlighting
significant associations between health-risk
behaviors and academic grades based on YRBS
data.
-

South Dakota Youth Tobacco Survey |
|
|
The
South Dakota Department of Health would like to
extend its sincere gratitude to all the schools
that participated in the survey this year! The
South Dakota Youth Tobacco Survey (YTS) is a
school-based survey of middle school students,
conducted every other year, in schools across
South Dakota. The YTS is a surveillance
component of the South Dakota Tobacco Control
Program, whose mission is to protect people from
second hand smoke and reduce tobacco use in
South Dakota. The YTS was developed to provide
systematic state-wide surveillance of youth
tobacco use. It provides data that can be used
to: 1) evaluate tobacco control programs; 2)
monitor trends in youth tobacco use; and 3)
compare tobacco use among different regions
across the state.
The
data will be analyzed and results will be
available at a later date. Results from the
survey completed in 2005 are available on the
website at:
http://doh.sd.gov/Tobacco/PDF/SDYouth2005.pdf. |

School Based Vaccination Clinics |
|
|
The
initiative to vaccinate all children with
influenza vaccine will continue for the 2008-09
influenza season. One of the ways to increase
the uptake of influenza vaccine is to conduct
school based vaccination clinics. The SD
Department of Health would like anyone with
interest in conducting a vaccination clinic to
contact us. We may be able to offer the
traditional influenza vaccine shot as well as
the intranasal type of vaccine. We would also be
interested in which vaccine presentation you
would prefer when conducting a clinic in a
school setting. Please contact Tim Heath at
605-773-5323 or by email at
Tim.Heath@state.sd.us
for more information or to express interest. |

Health Education Curriculum Analysis Tool |
|
|
CDC
announces the initial release of the Health
Education Curriculum Analysis Tool (HECAT). The
HECAT can help school districts, schools, and
others conduct a clear, complete, and consistent
analysis of health education curricula based on
the National Health Education Standards and
CDC's Characteristics of Effective Health
Education Curricula. The HECAT results can help
schools select or develop appropriate and
effective health education curricula and improve
the delivery of health education. The HECAT can
be customized to meet local community needs and
conform to the curriculum requirements of the
state or school district. For more information
