Teachers – you want to help your students choose
a fun, rewarding and guaranteed career, right?
South Dakota’s health care industry is projected
to need nearly 13,000 jobs by 2014 – an increase
of nearly 30% from 2004 to 2014. The South
Dakota Departments of Education, Health, Labor
and the Board of Regents have been working
collaboratively to address the critical need for
healthcare workers in the state. Health
Occupations for Today and Tomorrow (HOTT) was
created to increase students’ awareness of the
wide variety of health careers available to
them. “Check out the
latest HOTT newsletter
for valuable information as well as a variety of
FREE lesson plan activities.” For more

CDC Launches Health Education Web Tool for
Schools! |
|
|
From
the Division of Adolescent and School Health - -
CDC’s Centers and Divisions have developed a
wide variety of science-based and other
instructional materials that can help schools
enhance existing health education curriculum and
instruction.
CDC’s School Health Education Resources (SHER)
is a unique, user-friendly web tool that
consolidates these resources in one convenient
location. SHER helps Pre-K-12 classroom
teachers, school nurses, counselors, curriculum
directors, and school administrators easily
locate CDC’s health education resources.
SHER features instructional materials aligned
with the National Health Education Standards,
Second Edition, 2007, and CDC’s Characteristics
of Effective Health Education Curriculum. The
online database is searchable by:
-
Health education topics commonly found in a
comprehensive school health education
curriculum.
-
Four types of resources (curriculum and
lessons, teacher instructional materials,
student materials, and fact sheets).
-
Grade level groupings (Pre-K-2, 3-5, 6-8,
9-12).
SHER
provides the sole comprehensive, user-friendly
place to browse and access these resources at
CDC. Visit CDC's SHER online at

National Through with Chew Week/Great American
Spit Out Day |
|
|
South Dakota has one of the highest spit tobacco
use rates in the nation – 14% of young adult
males. We encourage you to promote National
Through with Chew Week which is February 17 -
23, 2008 and the Great American Spit Out Day on
Thursday, February 21st. Such efforts can reduce
the prevalence of tobacco use and its negative
affects on oral health. We believe that
“teachable moments” are a unique opportunity to
support students who are interested in quitting.
Research of health professionals shows that even
minimal interventions of less than three minutes
increase tobacco cessation. You can direct
tobacco users, including students, to the SD
QuitLine, 1-866-737-8487, which provides
tobacco cessation coaching, at no cost, along
with free medications and at least doubles the
participants likelihood of long-term success.
If you would like additional information about
the QuitLine or to order free youth tobacco
prevention materials including posters or
brochures go to:
http://doh.sd.gov/Tobacco. |

Child Nutrition Topics Offered through the DDN |
|
|
Child and Adult
Nutrition Services are offering 4 DDN sessions on child
nutrition topics from January through April 2008. Each session
will be two hours in length. The target audience is child
nutrition program staff, school wellness committee members,
teachers, administrators, school board members, parents and
other agency staff wanting to know more about these topics.
Others, such as SDSU Cooperative Extension, master gardeners,
health care professionals, concerned community members, etc, may
attend as space permits.
The January session will cover information pertaining to how the
school meal patterns may change and changes schools can make to
be ready. The February session will cover the basics of setting
up a school garden and how to link gardens to the cafeteria and
the classroom. The March session will teach schools to use
social marketing principles to motivate students to choose
healthy foods and beverages and be more physically active. The
April session will cover 2 topics: baking with whole grains and
evaluating all foods and beverages in the school to see how they
fit into the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
The sessions will be taught by Department of Education and South
Dakota State University staff as well as others to be
determined.
At this time, we are accepting applications to host the DDN
sessions. We will then select the locations for which the DDN
will be broadcast. Please submit the attached application form
by January 3rd, if your agency would like to host the sessions
