State applies for assessment funding
South Dakota is one of 31 states in a consortium that applied for funding under the Race to the Top Assessment program. The consortium is seeking the funds to design an assessment aligned to the recently released Common Core Standards.

The release of adequate yearly progress results, and the 2010 State Report Card, remains on schedule for the end of July.

FREE opportunity to honor Teacher of the Year
The department is paying for district-level Teachers of the Year to attend this year's Systems Change Conference in Chamberlain. A banquet will be held in their honor.

Schools awarded mini-grants to promote healthy eating
Nine South Dakota organizations were awarded $500 mini-grants to challenge youngsters to eat more vegetables and be more physically active.
