Healthier US School Challenge Training – February 9, 2011

Can your school qualify for a Healthier US School Challenge (HUSSC) Award?
• Does your school provide a healthy school environment?
• Do your school meals meet the Dietary Guidelines?
• Do students have opportunities for be physically active and to learn about nutrition?
• Are you a Team Nutrition School?
If you answered “Yes” to the questions above, then you are on your way to qualifying for an award.

To help schools learn more about qualifying for the award, Child and Adult Nutrition Services has arranged for The National Food Service Management Institute provide a 6 hour training that will answer all your questions and help you to apply for the HUSSC.

HUSSC Training will be held for Food Service Managers and Food Service Staff on Feb. 9, 2011 on the Augustana College campus in Sioux Falls. The cost is free, but a minimum of 20 participants must be registered in order to offer class. Make sure to bring a copy of the menus you are considering submitting for the challenge.

Spring Tobacco Prevention Institute - March 29-30, 2011

The South Dakota Department of Health, Tobacco Control Program encourages you to make plans to attend the 2011 Spring Tobacco Prevention Institute March 29th & 30th, 2011. The workshop will be held at the AmericInn Lodge & Suites in Fort Pierre, SD. Planned topics will include policy work, youth engagement strategies, coalition involvement and strengthening partnerships. A limited number of scholarships will be available.





- Adolescent Sexual Health Conference - May 4-5, 2011

South Dakota Coordinated School Health is teaming up with North Dakota and Minnesota to provide this conference for teachers, school staff, administrators, and pre-service teachers. Three national speakers will focus on policy, curriculum and instruction for teachers, cultural diversity, as well as up to date HIV information. The Adolescent Sexual Health Conference will be held May 4-5 in Fargo, ND. For more information contact HIV Coordinator, Amy Beshara at (605) 773-6898.





Child Nutrition Institute – June 19-24, 2011

The 47th annual South Dakota Child Nutrition Institute will be held June 19-June 24, 2011 in Sioux Falls at the Augustana College campus. Registration information will begin arriving in school mailboxes on/around February 1st. An online registration option will be available this year.

All tracks are 5-day courses and qualify for continuing education credits from the School Nutrition Association. Each track has a size limit and will be filled on a first come, first serve basis. Track descriptions and options will be available in February.





Team Nutrition Sponsors WE CAN! Training – July 12-13, 2011

South Dakota Team Nutrition is launching Ways to Enhance Children's Activity & Nutrition! (WE CAN!), a fast growing national movement of families and communities coming together to promote healthy weight in children ages 8-13 through improved food choices, increased physical activity, and reduced screen time. WE CAN! reaches parents and caregivers with educational materials and community programs to encourage healthy eating, increase physical activity and reduce sedentary time.

Free training will be offered to teams representing the local school, parents, and community programs. The teams attending training will be able to apply for a mini grant to implement the WE CAN! strategies. Save the date to attend: July 12-13, 2011 at Cedar Shores in Oacoma, SD. Applications will be posted in February at http://doe.sd.gov/cans/teamnutrition.asp.
